Daily Journal - State Comptroller talks Indiana finances, national debt concerns

Indiana’s finances were in great condition last year, the State Comptroller says. 

Still, Indiana State Comptroller Elise Nieshalla continues to have concern about rising national debt and is continuing to push for action to be taken. 

Nieshalla stopped by the Daily Journal for an interveiw duing a visit to Franklin. As State Comptroller, Nieshalla oversees an office tasked with accounting and reporting the state’s monies, payroll, paying the state’s bills and distributing tax revenues to local government units. 

“We are a model of fiscal responsibility,” Nieshalla said. 

2025 recap

The Hoosier state continues to see good finances. Fiscal year 2025, wich ended in June 2025, closed with $6.4 billion in state general revenues – 6.8% above revenue from fiscal year 2024, which had $24.7 billion in collections. Total state revenue was $53.8 billion in fiscal year 2025, including federal and other grants, while total state expences equaled $51.9 bilion, according to an overview of Indiana’s 2025 financial report.
